PREGNANCY & CHIROPRACTIC

During pregnancy, a woman’s center of gravity shifts forward to the front of her pelvis. The displaced weight increases the stress on her joints. As the baby grows, the woman’s weight is projected even farther forward, and the curvature of her lower back is increased, placing extra stress on the spinal disks. In compensation, the normal curvature of the upper spine increases, as well.

Pregnancy hormones help loosen the ligaments attached to the pelvic bones. This natural change, designed to accommodate the growing baby, can result in postural imbalances, such as a misaligned spine or joint.

When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help with:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Increasing the likelihood of full-term delivery
  • Reducing the time of labor and delivery
  • Relieving back, neck or joint pain
  • Preventing a potential cesarean section

Many physicians and midwives routinely recommend chiropractic care as a safe and effective form of treatment for mid and lower back pain, sciatica, and other aches and pains associated with pregnancy.
